Calcipressin-3 (RCAN3), is a calcineurin inhibitor that down-regulates NFAT-dependent cytokine gene expression. SARS-CoV-1 nonstructural protein 1 (nsp1) binds to RCAN3, activating the Cyclophilin A/NFAT pathway, ultimately enhancing the induction of the IL-2 promoter. This effect may be part of the cause of the cytokine dysregulation seen in SARS-infected cells (Pfefferle et al, 2011; Law et al, 2007; Mulero et al, 2007).
