Upon binding IP3, ITPR3 transports calcium ions across the endoplasmic reticulum membrane according to the concentration gradient from the ER lumen to the cytosol (Lock et al. 2018). The mouse homolog of ITPR3 is expressed in type II (umami, sweet, bitter) taste cells where it responds to IP3 produced by PLCB2 (Hisatsune et al. 2007).
