Activation of the STAT3 pathway downstream of ALK signaling contributes to cellular survival by modulating expression of a number of genes involved in apoptosis, immune response and angiogenesis (reviewed in Werner et al, 2009). The STAT3 pathway is particularly important in ALK+ cancers that express ALK fusion proteins, where STAT3 contributes to the repression of a number of tumor suppressor genes, highlighting its role as a critical oncogene (reviewed in Yu et al, 2014; Guanizo et al, 2018).
