Based on mouse studies, NPAS4 binds the promoter of the CDK5R1 gene, encoding p35, a neuron-specific activator of CDK5 (Yun et al. 2013). It is uncertain whether NPAS4 heterodimerized with ARNT, ARNT2 or ARNTL binds to the CDK5R1 gene promoter. Therefore, all three complexes (NPAS4:ARNT, NPAS4:ARNT2 and NPAS4:ARNTL) are shown as candidates. In rat primary neurons, Npas4, Arnt and Arnt2 bind to the Cdk5r1 gene promoter and Cdk5r1 gene transcription is significantly upregulated upon Npas4 activation (Brigidi et al. 2019).
