Calmodulin (CALM1, also known as CaM), activated by binding to Ca2+ ions, forms a complex with adenylate cyclase 1 (ADCY1, also known as AC1) (Levin and Reed 1995, Masada et al. 2012) or adenylate cyclase 8 (ADCY8, also known as AC8) (Gu and Cooper 1999, Masada et al. 2012, Herbst et al. 2013), thereby activating them.
