Neurotrophins regulate neuronal cell survival and synaptic plasticity through activation of nerve growth factor receptor tyrosine kinases (NTRKs). Pituitary adenylate cyclase-activating polypeptide (ADCYAP1), a neuromodulator acting through type 1 PACAP receptors (ADCYAP1R1), can transactivate NTRKs (they autophosphorylate) in the absence of neurotrophins (Jeanneteau & Chao 2006). The mechanism of this activation is not fully understood.
