Based on studies in mice, transcription of the MEF2C gene is directly inhibited by MECP2 (Chahrour et al. 2008). MEF2C encodes myocyte-specific enhancer factor 2C, a transcription factor involved in hippocampus-dependent learning and memory (Barbosa et al. 2008).
