Plasma membrane-associated SLC22A13 (solute carrier family 22 member 13, also known as OCTL3 (organic cation transporter-like 3) mediates the exchange of extracellular nicotinate (NCA) for cytosolic urate. The protein is especially abundant in the kidney but is widely expressed in other tissues of the body (Bahn et al. 2008), and Covarrubias et al. (2021) describe it as one of the transporters that feeds extracellular NCA into the Preiss-Handler pathway for nicotinamide biosynthesis.
