Cytosolic maleylacetoacetic acid isomerase (MAAI, GSTZ1) catalyzes the conversion of 4-maleylacetoacetate to 4-fumarylacetoacetate. The enzyme is a homodimer, requiring one glutathione (GSH) molecule per monomer as cofactor (Polekhina et al. 2001; Board et al., 2003; Boone et al., 2014).
