SGPP1 and 2 (sphingosine-1-phosphate phosphatase 1 and 2) enzymes associated with the endoplasmic reticulum membrane catalyze the hydrolysis of cytosolic sphingosine 1-phosphate (S1P), dihydro-S1P, and phyto-S1P. to form sphinganine (dihydrosphingosine, phytosphingosine) and orthophosphate. Availability of sphingoids versus sphingoid-1-phosphates has direct influence on all processes involving ceramides (Johnson et al. 2003; Ogawa et al. 2003; Giussani et al., 2006).
