Correctly folded, disulfide-bonded proinsulin in the endoplasmic reticulum moves to the Golgi apparatus via COPII-coated ER to Golgi transport vesicles that bud from the endoplasmic reticulum (Dodson & Steiner 1998; Orci et al. 1985).
