It has been observed, however, that the oligomerization of Cx43 into connexons does not occur before the Trans-Golgi network (Musil and Goodenough, 1993; Koval, 2006). Cx proteins are cotranslationally inserted into ER membranes in an SRP (signal recognition particle)-dependent process (Falk et al., 1994).
