Glucose phosphate isomerase catalyzes the reversible conversion of glucose 6-phosphate and fructose 6-phosphate. A cDNA corresponding to chicken GPI has been cloned and used to demonstrate that the gene is widely expressed in embryonic and adult tissues (Halbook et al. 1989). At the level of resolution provided by starch gel electrophoresis, two entities with glucose phosphate isomerase activity can be detected in chicken muscle (Scopes 1968).
