BRCA1 phosphorylation occurs at multiple sites by ATM and is regulated by MDC1 in human. Although Ser1189 and Ser1542 are conserved in chicken BRCA1, ATM phosphorylation of these serine residues has not yet been established. BRCA1 has been implicated early in the homologous recombination repair pathway by its role in NBS1 phosphorylation by ATM as well as an interaction with MRN complex.
