Activated ATM phosphorylates WHSC1 (MMSET) on serine residue S102 (Matsuoka et al. 2007). The BRCT domain of MDC1 binds phosphorylated WHSC1, which is necessary for retention of WHSC1 at DNA double-strand break (DSB) sites (Pei et al. 2011).
