The maturation of the early endosome compartment into a late endosome is triggered by the presence of phosphoinositide phosphatidylinositol 3,5-bisphosphate (PI(3,5)P2) (Cabezas et al. 2006, Ikonomov et al. 2006, Ikonomov et al. 2001).
